University Graphic Systems (UGS) is a student-managed, student-operated commercial printing and digital imaging enterprise within the Graphic Communication Department of California Polytechnic State Universtiy San Luis Obispo. UGS has been an integral part of the Graphic Communication Department's educational program since 1968.

UGS works along the idea of Cal Poly's mission of Learn By Doing by preparing students for careers in the graphic communication industry. The entire company is run by students from the General Manager to bindery operations. By working with UGS, clients help support the students involved in instilling learning experiences from all aspects of running and operating a company.

The UGS managers go through an interview process and hired annually to manage and run the company. The managers are students chosen from the Graphic Communication Department. Each manager is appointed and trained by managers preceding them before they begin their term as an official manager the following year.

Students that are involved in UGS train for two quarters in specific departments such as sales, marketing, prepress, estimating, sheetfed and web offset lithography, and bindery. Depending upon the amount of experience obtained, students may adance to supervisory roles within their specific areas of interest.

UGS employs a full-time technician and is under the advisement of the Graphic Communication Department faculty members.

UGS has printed many things on the Cal Poly campus, and to list a few, the Mustang Daily, Cal Poly Corporation's (formerly Foundation) annual report, and the discontinued Class Schedules.
